A United Methodist Church serving Barnum and the surrounding communities |

|
As a graduate of Hamline University in 1947 (major, Music Education; minor, Spanish, French, German) I am the official Hamline representative for Barnum Community United Methodist church. Don majored in Social Studies. As such, I receive the quarterly Hamline magazine. The summer issue notes several milestones.
Hamline’s School of Law is rated as one of America’s Best Graduate Schools, rising to the third tier in the national rankings of the nation’s best law schools, graduate schools and specialty programs published by U.S. News and World Report.
Hamline has been famous for many long years for its music program, even attracting famous composers such as Ernst Krenek and Russell Harris to the staff.
When Don and I were there, Hamline’s basketball program was famous, players like Hal Haskins and Vern Mikkelson going on to great fame as pros. Long-time coach and athletic director, Joe Hutton, garnered many national awards.
What I had forgotten was that the 1947-1948 hockey team won the MIAC title! Winning then took dedication—the players built their own rink, putting up boards, flooding with water, shoveling snow.
Ahead to 2007-2008 season, the Hamline Pipers once again were MIAC champions, beating St. John’s University 6-5! Co-captains Joe Long and Dennis Fulton were named Division III first team All Americans for their outstanding play during the season.
And the women’s hockey team went to MIAC playoffs for the second time, beating Bethel, but lost in the first game to Gustavus.
More milestones: Hamline University has been named to the third annual Presidents’ Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The award recognizes the extraordinary volunteer efforts by the university and its students in serving local and national communities.
This fall, Hamline creates the School of Business, a new undergraduate and graduate program offering Masters degrees in business administration, non-profit management and public administration, as well as enhanced undergraduate degrees in business and economics.
This summer Hamline launched a Summer Language Institute for elementary through high school. Students have the option of studying Chinese, French, Spanish or German.
The women’s cross country team was recognized by the U. S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for having the highest GPA average in the country, out of 360 Division III cross country teams in the nation, the Pipers overall GPA of 3.74 was the highest.
Other winter team news: women’s basketball made the MIAC playoffs. Jake Burgess made a new Hamline swimming record in the 50-yard freestyle; Ali Clausen was invited to compete at the NCGA National Tournament on the vault. Kate Raasch, hockey, was named to the all-MIAC first team.
I wanted to take time and space to remind Barnum UMC’s sophomores, juniors and seniors to consider seriously your Methodist university, Hamline, as the next state of education and possibly on to advanced degrees.
It as grown a lot since Don and I studied and worked there |
